Keeping mosquitoes out of fountain, w/o harming birds.?

Hi. I have a small outdoor fountain. I'm not home a lot of the time, so I don't want it to run continuously. Where I live, Louisiana, we have a lot of mosquitoes, and I'm afraid the standing water will attract them. Does anyone know how I can keep the mosquitoes away without harming birds? Someone told me to use a small amount of bleach, but I'm worried about the birds. Thanks for any help!!

There's a product called Mosquito Dunks. Safe for everything and gets rid of all mosquitoes. You can get it at your nursery or maybe even a big box store.

Should parakeets have a little bird bath in their cage?

Should they have a little bowl for bird bath or it doesnt matter?

They have bird baths at pet stores such as PetSmart. They have sizes for parakeet and others for larger birds. Make sure you change the water daily because of the feces that can get in the water. Sometimes it wont hurt to change it twice daily. Or you could just try a lil spray mist bottle.

Help...What should I do with this ugly pond?

I bought a house (in Peoria, AZ) and it came with a half finished pond in the front yard. The THANG looks UGLY!... See photos here:

Any ideas what I could do with it?
I thought about a few choices:
1) Cover the waterfal steps with flat stone (slate? or whatever they call it) Do the same with the pond wall
2) take out waterfall and replace it with a water feature in the middle (some kind of water fountain thing that sprays water)
3) Take out the whole thing and replace it with a small birdbath and plant some trees there for shade.
Any suggestions?
I actually like the idea of having some fish there, but I'm worried about the costs
btw... the neighbors are begging me to get rid of it.
