A whole lot of sand in my pond?

I have a whole lot of sand and dirt in the bottom of my pond after hurricane irene hit. I have two water features, fish, tadpoles & a snail. Is there anything I can do to get rid of all this sand & dirt? Will this hurt any of my little aquatic pals?

Are there any fish that live in rivers that end in a waterfall? What happens to them if there are; are they able to survive the drop or can they turn around and swim against the current?
